So the first month of the 2006 season is over for the Jays. They ended the month 12-11, 1 game behind both the Yankees (13-10) and the Red Sox (14-11). They were 8-6 at home and 4-5 on the road. Detroit is holding down the wildcard spot at 16-9.
Sure they are 1 game over .500, but if they had better starting pitching, they could've been a few games up on the Yanks and Sox. The team ERA is 5.28, 9th in the league, heading into tonights game against the Orioles. They've had to use 7 starters after 23 games, due to Burnett and Halladay missing starts, and there is no time table on Burnett's return to the rotation. Only Halladay (2.84 ERA) and Lilly (3.72 ERA) have put up decent numbers so far. Janssen (4.50 ERA, 1 start), Chacin (4.70 ERA, but has a 4-1 record), Burnett (6.38 ERA), Downs (an ERA of over 9 in 2 starts), and Towers (10.45 ERA) have struggled or were battling injury. Closer B.J. Ryan has yet to surrender, while collecting 4 saves in 11 appearances.
The bats on the other hand, have been stellar for the most part, .301/.364/.493. The outfielders bats have been on fire, Wells is batting.396 with 9 homers and 25 RBI's, Rios .362 with 6 homers and 19 RBI's and platooners Catalanotto .413, 2 homers and 10 RBI's and Johnson .375, 0 HR's and 2 RBI's. In Hinke's limited at bats, he's hitting .323. The middle infield of Adams and Hill have struggled at the plate, batting .225 and .195 respectively.
