The Blue Jays selected shortstop Jason Smith from the Chicago Cubs in the major league portion of the Rule 5 Draft this morning. The Cubs had signed Smith to a minor league contract a month ago. He appeared in 49 games with the Rockies last year, hitting .263 with 5 home runs.
The Cincinnati Reds selected Jays minor leaguer, Francisco Mateo in the Triple-A portion of the draft. Mateo was 5-2 with a 4.18 ERA in 14 games with Pulaski last season.
The Jays did not select anyone in the Double-A and Triple-A portion of the draft.
