After two consectutive loses, and 4 of the last 5, the Jays need to turn things around quickly before they fall further out of contention. The Jays sit five games behind the Boston Red Sox for the division lead (the Yankees trail the Red Sox by 3) and are nine games back of the wild card leaders Chicago White Sox.
Taubenheim, now 1-5, only lasted 2 2.3 innings giving up 5 hits and 4 runs. Scott Downs came in and allowed 2 more runs in 2 1/3 innings, which raised his ERA to over 5. Shaun Marcum came in and pitched 3 scoreless innings but it was too late. The Jays could only manage to single runs in the 7th and 9th innings. Vernon Wells hit his 21st home run of the season to lead off the 9th.
