Jays First Round Draft Choice

With the 14th overall pick in the 2006 MLB amateur draft, the Blue Jays have selected Travis Snider OF/1B 6’0 220 pounds (might be as much as 240 pounds) from Jackson HS (Wash). A left handed hitting power guy, probably a corner outfielder.

One factor that influences some teams decision on drafting a player, is his signability. Here are the signing bonuses awarded to the players drafted in the 14th spot over the last 3 years.

2005: Ryan Wagner (Cin) - $1,400,000
2004: Billy Butler (KC) - $1,450,000
2003: Trevor Crowe (Cle) - $1,695,000

Player Notes from MLB.com
"He has the chance to be a prototypical corner OF or 1B in terms of power, though there are questions about his defense. He's as complete a high school hitter as there is in the draft"

From ESPN:
"Snider burst onto the scene in the Area Code Games before his junior year of high school, and despite adding some weight this season (and not the good kind), he's still likely to go in the top half of the first round. The left-handed hitter has a sound, conventional swing that generates significant raw and in-game power, with a number of long home runs on his résumé. He'll need to hit and hit for power, however, as he is likely to end up in left field or at first base in the pros, due to his body type and his below-average arm."
