Short a Few At-Bats

Reed Johnson is quietly putting together a solid season, both in the field and at the plate. It seems that every couple of games, Johnson comes up with a spectacular catch. For the last couple of season, we've become accustom to great defensive play, but what is surprising is his how he's been swinging the bat.

To qualify for the batting title, each hitter is too have 3.1 plate appearences for every game the team plays. Johnson needs 325.5 at-bats to qualify for the batting title, he currently sits at 280 at-bats. With the leg infection to Alex Rios that forced him out of line for around a month, the platoon outfield Johnson, look full advantage of some extra playing time. Heading into today's action, Johnson is hitting .346, which would rank him 3rd in the majors (behind Mauer and Jeter) if he had enough at-bats. His .425 OBP would be ranked 10th overall, and 5th in the American League (excluding Abrue who was just traded to the Yankees).

With Rios's (.324) return to the lineup, Catalanotto hitting well (.325), and improved hitting of Eric Hinske (.277 at 12 HRs), getting enough at-bats for Johnson to qualify for the batting title will be hard.
