What looked like a blowout for 7 innings, sure did change quickly in the last 2 innings. Boston scored 2 runs in the 8th and 3 in the 9th, before B.J. Ryan came in to get Ortiz to fly out to right. My initial reaction was that it would clear the right field wall. Thankfully, Ortiz got under it.
The Jays scored 8 runs in the first 6 innings, capped by a grand slam by Vernon Wells in the 2nd. Ted Lilly pitched the way we need him to all year, going 7 innings, giving up 1 run on 6 hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out 10. If the Jays are going to be serious contenders for the division or wildcard, Lilly has to continue to pitch like that, and not like his first outing. With Halladay and Burnett already having health concerns, Lilly pitching well becomes even more important. Tallet and Frasor looked shaky in relief, giving up 5 runs combined.
The Jays took 2 of 3 from the Sox, and are off to face the White Sox. Scott Downs (0-0) faces Javier Vazquez in the opener tonight.
So Much for a Blowout
