Overbay Picking it Up

Facing familiar National League pitching has helped Lyle Overbay gain some confidence and improve his batting average. Switching leagues usually gives hitters trouble as they have to adjust to a whole set of new pitchers.

Thru Overbay's last 10 games of interleague play (as of Wednesday), he's hitting .405, and is hitting .349 against National League pitching on the season. Of Overbay's 12 HR's, 43 RBI's and 41 runs scored in 278 at-bats. 3 HR's, 8 RBI's, 9 runs in 57 at-bats have come against the National League.

One American League team Overbay is having success with is the Chicago White Sox, he has 3 home runs, 5 runs batted in and is hitting .476 in 21 at-bats.

A Funny Quote

Although it's not directly related to the Blue Jays, I had to post this quote from Barry Bond's personal trainer (Greg Anderson) lawyer. Anderson declined to testify yesterday before the Grand Jury. When Anderson's lawyer, Mark Geragos, was asked if Anderson will testify, he offered this response...
"Apparently there are not enough terrorists to fight. The government has to keep the world safe from illegally produced home runs."

Rios in the Hospital

Rios will spend the night in the hospital as a precaution to an infection he has on his leg. On Tuesday night he fouled a ball off of his lower leg and was held out of last nights game. The injury has since worsened, and doctors have him on strong antibiotics. It is not known yet if he'll have to be placed on the DL.

A Stellar Performance and a Farewell

A.J. Burnett pitched his 9th career shutout last night, to earn his first victory in a Blue Jays uniform. Burnett baffled the Washington Nationals batters all night, giving up only 6 hits and striking out 7 batters while walking no one. Of his 92 pitches that he threw, only 22 were balls. Burnett's stuff was nasty all night, and his fastball in the 7th inning was still at 97 mph.

The Josh Towers saga appears to be over. The 1-9 right hander was outrighted to Syracuse and removed from the 40 man roster. Ty Taubenheim will most take Tower's spot in the rotation on Saturday, but the Jays haven't ruled out calling up Dustin McGowan to make the start. Jays management is thinking that Taubenheim would be more effective out of the bullpen.

Pete Walker has activated from the 15-day DL.

Looking Good So Far

Thru 3 innings so far, Burnett has only given up 1 hit and has struck 5 batters. I hope I'm not jinxing him by writing this update.

Rosario Optioned to Syracuse

After last night's 6-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves, the Jays optioned relief pitcher Francisco Rosario back to the Triple A Sryacuse SkyChiefs. This roster move was done to clear room for the return of A.J. Burnett.

After only giving up 1 run in his first 5 appearances, Rosario struggled a bit, giving up 10 runs in his last 10 appearances. The 25 year old rookie has showed enough promise to warrent a call-up later on in the year.

Blue Jay Notes

Benji Molina extended his hitting streak to 17 games last night. He is 23 for 63 (.361) durning the streak. Molina and Zaun combined have only gone hitless once since May 24.

Gibbon's would eventually like to move Rios down to the 5th or 6th. This move would definitely help increase his RBI total. Rios has 50 RBI's so far this season.

Alex Rios is leading the American League 213,346 write-in votes for the all-star game.

According to the Toronto Sun, the $1.7 million signing bonus given to first round pick Travis Snider, was the 5th hightest given out by the Blue Jays. 2005 pick Ricky Romero was the highest at $2.4 million, followed by Felipe Lopez ($2 million), Gabe Gross ($1.865 million), Russ Adams ($1.785 million) and then Snider. Aaron Hill, Vernon Wells, David Purcey, Billy Koch and Zach Johnson round out the top 10.

A.J. Burnett is scheduled to start tomorrow night.

Jays Open Up in Atlanta

The Blue Jays are looking to break out of there interleague slump against the struggling Atlanta Braves tonight. So far this season, the Jays are 0-6 when playing National League teams, being swept by both the Colorado Rockies and most recently, the Florida Marlins.

After being recalled the other day, Josh Towers is making his return to the starting rotation. When looking at the starting pitchers numbers this season, it definitely doesn't look like it will be a pitchers duel. Tower's is 1-8 with a 9.00 ERA, while the Braves are sending the Jorge Sosa who's 1-9 with a 5.35 ERA.

Troy Glaus will be making the start at short stop, with Shea Hillenbrand playing third. Shea's bat is needed in the lineup, as the Blue Jays struggled to score runs during their last series against Florida. They scored only 4 runs in three games.
