It wasn't much of a surprise that Justin Speier and Frank Catalanotto didn't re-sign with the Blue Jays. Catalanotto signed (pending a physical) a 3-year deal with the Texas Rangers for $13 million. The deal also includes a team option for a fourth year. With the signing of Frank Thomas last week, and Reed Johnson's emergence in left field, made Catalanotto expendable. J.P. was always saying that he'd like to re-sign Frank, but I don't think he tried very hard, knowing there wouldn't be a lot free at-bats for him. Also, Catalanotto wanted to play in the field, rather than DH. Reed Johnson is a much better fielder than Catalanotto.
Justin Speier joined an already solid Angels bullpen. Speier's deal is for four years, at a reported $18 million. Speier will be missed in the Jays bullpen next year as he was the main set-up guy for most of the season. He posted a 2-0 record with a 2.98 ERA in 58 appearances.
