Here we go with first of many blogs about the Toronto Blue Jays. The Jays were 6-3 winners in their home opener against the Twins last night. I was one of the over 50,000 in attendance for the game, and so far, I like what I see. Not just on the field, but the excitement that is surrounding the team. Granted it was the home opener, and that attendance will substantially decrease, but there was a buzz about the stadium. This year, people seem to have a little faith in the team.
I was impressed with Alex Rios’s day at the plate. He hit the ball hard in four of his five at bats, belting his first home run of the season. We have seen glimpses of this over the past couple seasons, so it’s nothing to write home about just yet.
Halladay pitched a solid 7 2/3 innings, giving up 3 runs on 2 long balls to ex-jays Shannon Stewart and Tony Batista.
The new acquisitions had impressive debuts, capped by Bengie Molina’s blast that almost made it to the seats in the 5th deck. B.J Ryan came in to pick up save. I was surprised that his fastball topped out last night at around 90 mph. The guy is 6-6 and 260 pounds, I was sure he would throw in the mid to high 90’s.
