Hello, let me please explain my recent absence. For the most part the stories that have dominated sports lately are about animal cruelty, cheating, pop-culture, and the fixing of games. I really have no interest in any of these topics, its sports and athleticism that I care about. That's what Speedburner on Sports is all about, not pop-culture and felons. A Dwyane Wade dunk, a Reggie Bush jaw-dropping run, or A-Rod going 3-4 with two home runs.
It used to be about Michael Vick when he was becoming the first QB to rush for 1,000 yards in a season last year, before his own terrible judgment and choices basically ruined his NFL career. How ironic it is that the only NFL jersey I ever bought in my life, after happily drafting him to my 2006 fantasy football roster, belongs more in the mouth of a Pit Bull than on my back. The whole story just saddens me because Vick is the quintessential Speedburner athlete, pure videogame fantasy come to life - "let's see, Ill make my QB run like an elite RB who can throw the ball 70 yards as well." Now, he's largely reviled and without a career; good luck, Mike.
Even though I don't like to talk about stuff like refs fixing games in the NBA, that doesn't mean Im not deeply disturbed by it, like most people. Read Bill Simmons on ESPN, he's got a great piece regarding this scandal.
Regarding David Beckham, soccer in America and all that hype just realized he is 90% pop-culture and 10% sports these days - go to TMZ or Perez Hilton to catch up on him & Posh mean Victoria.
Finally, theres steroids and Bonds and the home run record. Hmmm, he wouldn't have gotten it without the chemical enhancement, but he is a Hall of Famer with or without his 'flaxseed oilҒ. I just don't care to evaluate it any further than that; he's an arrogant jerk anyway.
So now we are finally getting out of the summer doldrums and into the excitement of analyzing college & pro football to death for 30 days. I am neck deep in USC depth charts as I cant wait to see how a few of their position battles unfold, while trying to also study hard for my fantasy draft on August 26th. I will happily post my draft and talk fantasy after that date, but in the meantime, I've got league members who read this blog. Look for an analysis of the Boston/Minnesota KG trade next week, and try not to let all this negative crap bother you too much. Running, jumping, diving, throwing, hitting, catching, that's what sports are about!!!
