Speedburner on Sports

Growing up in Los Angeles during the 70’s, I became a huge USC football fan, and my love of sports and statistics just snowballed from there. I still live in L.A., and still love the Trojans, but hate the Dodgers and Lakers. I’m also a huge fan of tennis – both watching and playing - and hope to someday see a revival in its popularity.

The JD Drew Signing…Huh?

When the Dodgers signed JD Drew to a 5 year, $55m deal, myself and many others thought it was quite a rich deal for an often-injured, underachieving, lackadaisical outfielder. When he played only 72 games in the first year of that deal, I thought “Same old JD Drew. Nice investment Dodgers”. When he opted out of said deal this winter, it struck me as a rather bold move by him – who’s going to offer more than $33m for 3 years for him?

The answer of course was the Boston Red Sox, who in their never-ending quest to finally gain superiority over their nemesis and archrival NY Yankees decided Drew was worth $70m for the next 5 years. So exactly what are they getting for their $14m/yr investment? Let’s see…

A player who in 8 seasons has never played in 150 games, while 4 times playing in less than 110 games…has batted .300 just once…has hit at least 30 hrs just once, 25 hrs just twice…knocked in 100 RBI just once, at least 90 only twice (but has struck out over 100 times 3 different seasons). How about the intangibles? Does he hustle, play through injuries, is he a clubhouse leader? No, no, and no. At 31 ½ years old on opening day 2007, is there any reason to think any of this will change? No. Good luck in getting any return on this investment Boston.
