Daily Hoops Awards for Mar. 17th 2010

The Akeem Olajuwon Award:
Lebron James --- 29 pts, 12 reb, 12 asst, 8 FTM, 1 stl, 1 blk, 1 trey, and 10-22 FG%...A dirty dozen triple double for Lebron...not as epic as his ridiculous 40-12-12-12 (FTM) game a few weeks ago, but fat nonetheless. I read somewhere recently that at 8.6 asst/gm this year, only two players in NBA history as tall as him have averaged that many dimes - Magic & Wilt. Tyreke almost had a 'BC Roti' quadruple double last night, finishing with 25, 11 rebs, 10 FTM, but only 9 dimes.

The Luc Longley Award
Kevin Love --- 3 pts, 7 reb, 3 asst, 3 FTM, 0 stl, 0 blk, 0 treys, and 0-7 shooting in 26 minutes...Love is interesting - tremendously skilled, a great rebounder (11.1/gm in just 28.9 min/gm, 13.4 if he was getting 35 min/night), and an outstanding passer, but has ZERO athleticism. If you gave him Tyrus Thomas' athleticism and explosivenes, and let him keep his skills, he'd probably become the greatest PF in NBA history.

Daily Hoops Awards for Mar. 16th 2010

The Akeem Olajuwon Award:
Carmelo Anthony --- 45 pts, 10 reb, 3 asst, 6 FTM, 0 stl, 1 blk, 3 treys, and 18-35 FG%...A fat night for Melo, but alas, his potential game-tying shot at the buzzer missed. Melo is averaging 28.8 pts/gm this season, but surprisingly, that is not his career high - he averaged 28.9 in 2006-07. What's even more impressive is his career scoring average, a fat 24.7 pts/gm. That's good for #14 on the all time NBA list (not including ABA), right behind Dominique Wilkins and just ahead of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. With Lebron currently 3rd on that list (27.8) and Wade #10 (25.4), that makes 3 guys from the 2003 draft in top 14 scoring all time...wow!

The Luc Longley Award
Al Thornton --- 4 pts, 4 reb, 0 asst, 2 FTM, 0 stl, 0 blk, 0 treys, and 1-9 shooting in 24 minutes...Thornton is consistently inconsistent, a great raw athlete who doesn't possess a great all-around skill set. The Wizards played Utah last night, but AK-47, a great defender, was out, so he can't use that as an excuse. Also last night, 3 all-star caliber players had tragic shooting exhibitions - Andre Iguodala (5-22), Monta Ellis (5-23), and Chris Kaman (3-15)...a combined 13-60, or 21.7%.

Daily Hoops Awards for Mar. 15th 2010

The Akeem Olajuwon Award:
Tyreke Evans --- 29 pts, 9 reb, 11 asst, 7 FTM, 2 stl, 0 blk, 2 treys, and 10-19 FG%...The heavy favorite for rookie of the year had another stellar outing vs. the hapless T-Wolves, as the Kings romped to an easy victory. With 1 more rebound, Evans would have had his 2nd career triple double, his first coming just two games ago. At 20.3, 5.1 reb, and 5.6 asst, he remains on pace to become just the 4th rookie to average 20, 5, and 5, joining Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan, and Lebron James. Speaking of Lebron, he was a close 2nd last night with 30, 8 reb, 7 asst, and 3 blks. Amare was also close with 36, 12 rebs, and 14-14 from the line.

The Luc Longley Award
Beno Udrih --- 2 pts, 1 reb, 1 asst, 0 FTM, 1 stl, 0 blk, 0 treys, and 1-8 shooting in 26 minutes...About the only thing notable about Udrih is the funny first name. He's a career backup PG, servicably decent, who is now a starter since Sacto traded Kevin Martin last month. He starts alongside Tyreke, but the rookie handles the ball more often. He was a starter the last two years in Sacto, averaging about 12 pts and 4.5 assts, after 3 years of backing up Tony Parker in San Antonio.

Daily Hoops Awards for Mar. 12th 2010

The Akeem Olajuwon Award:
Brandon Roy --- 41 pts, 8 reb, 3 asst, 13 FTM, 2 stl, 1 blk, 0 treys, and 14-22 FG%...Brandon Roy was the 6th pick of the NBA draft in 2006. Two of the 5 guys taken before him are absolute scrub players who might as well be D-League call ups - Adam 'Porn Stache' Morrison and Shelden Williams. If that draft was held today, Roy would likely go in the top 2 along with Rondo. Of the first 20 picks in the 2006 draft, no less than a dozen, 60%, are either out of the league, or complete non factors on their teams. Check it out, it's pretty ugly. http://www.dougstats.com/Drafts/2006

The Luc Longley Award
Brad Miller --- 2 pts, 1 reb, 1 asst, 0 FTM, 1 stl, 0 blk, 0 treys, and 1-5 shooting in 20 minutes...Miller entered the league as kind of a goon, and his fight with Shaq years ago only cemented that image. But then he went to Sacramento in his 6th season and showed a lot of skill, becoming one of the best passing big men in the league and averaging 14.1 pts, 10.4 rebs, and 4.3 assts in 2003-04. He's now a fading backup in Chicago, pressed into starting duty with Joachim Noah's injury.

Daily Hoops Awards for Mar. 11th 2010

The Akeem Olajuwon Award:
Jason Kidd --- 20 pts, 4 reb, 9 asst, 3 FTM, 4 stl, 1 blk, 5 treys, and 6-13 FG%...and... Dwyane Wade --- 27 pts, 6 reb, 8 asst, 15 FTM, 2 stl, 0 blk, 0 treys, and 6-12 FG%...I can actually say I've known about Kidd since he was an 8th grader. I entered college (UCSB) in 1987 and there was a guy on my floor from Northern California, huge sports fan like myself, who was telling me about an 8th grader up there named Jason Kidd who was definitely going to be the next big thing, passes like Magic, all that stuff...and he was dead on! 2nd most assists in NBA history, 9.2/gm average for his career, which is now 16 years old and still going strong. He's averaging 10.1 pts, 9.4 dimes, 5.5 rebs (6.6 rebs/gm for career!), 1.9 stls, and shooting a very respectable, for him, 42.8% from the floor this year.

The Luc Longley Award
James Posey --- 0 pts, 3 reb, 0 asst, 0 FTM, 1 stl, 0 blk, 0 treys, and 0-4 shooting in 13 minutes...wow, talk about your bad contracts!! After playing some good defense and hitting some clutch shots as a reserve on the Celtics championship squad in 2008 - but only averaging 7.4 pts, 4.3 rebs, and 41.8 FG% during the regular season - the Hornets signed Posey to a 4 year, $25m deal...oops! After posting numbers of 8.9 pts, 4.8 rebs, and 41.2% shooting last year, Posey has plummeted to 5.1 pts, 4.5 rebs, and a god-awful 35.8% this year. How can an NBA GM be so dumb? He was coming off his 9th season before signing this deal, a career which saw him average double figures just 3 times, and never more than 14.1 pts in a season!! Hope they enjoy paying him more than $13m the next two seasons for more of this stellar play.

Daily Hoops Awards for Mar. 10th 2010

The Akeem Olajuwon Award:
Kobe Bryant --- 32 pts, 6 reb, 6 asst, 10 FTM, 1 stl, 0 blk, 0 treys, and 11-20 FG%...And yes, he also had yet another game winner to end the lakers longest losing streak (3 games) in 2 years. But one of the reasons I like Wade more than Kobe is because no matter how well guarded he is, Kobe ALWAYS shoots in that situation, whereas Wade will pass if he's guarded too well. Either way, both are epic performers. Andrew Bogut was huge too last night, coming up with 25, 17, 5 blks, and 5 FTM to help the Bucks upset the Celtics.

The Luc Longley Award

Rookie PF Taj Gibson with the Bulls had 1 rebound in 12 minutes before fouling out.  Every other stat was zero, except for turnovers - he had 3 of those.  Tragic!!!

Ray Allen --- 3 pts, 4 reb, 3 asst, 3 FTM, 1 stl, 0 blk, 0 treys, and 0-3 shooting in 34 minutes...Yes, 34 minutes and only 3 shot attempts, none of which found the hole - pretty gross. 14 years is a long time to play SG in the NBA, and Allen is showing those signs, like an inability to create his own shot like he could when he was elite. But still, rather amazingly, Allen is still averaging 16.2 pts, 3.4 rebs, and 2.7 asst while shooting 46.6% this year. In the same game, Luc Richard Mbah Moute was pretty awful, going 0-4 with 4 rebs and 1 dime in 25 minutes, and Q Rich in Miami was also weak last night, going 2-8, 7 of the shots being 3's, and grabbing 2 rebs with 0 assts in 30 minutes.
