NFL Awards - Week 14 of the 2010 Season
| Tom Brady…27-40, 369 yds, 0 picks, 2 TD passes…Brady has been absurdly good this year, especially in his last 5 games, where he’s averaging 314 yards, completing 71.9% of his passes, and has thrown for 15 TDs and 0 picks. For the season, he’s only thrown 4 interceptions against 29 TD passes. For his career, Brady is now 18th on the all-time passing yards list, behind Jim Hart and just above Steve DeBerg with 34,242 yards. For TD passes, he’s tied with the namesake of this award, Dan Fouts, in 12th place with 254. He’s also the current favorite for league MVP, which would be his 2nd after winning in 2007 with his remarkable statistical season – 4,806 yards and an NFL record 50 TDs with only 8 interceptions. On the NFL Network’s top 100 all-time player list, he ranked at #21. |
| Carson Palmer…20-32, 178 yds, 3 picks, 1 TD…and… Chad Henne…5-18, 55 yds, 0 picks, 1 TD. Two of Palmers picks were taken in for scores, which has to be the worst thing that could happen to a football team – a turnover that immediately results in 7 points for the other team – brutal. Doing that twice, as Peyton Manning did in back-to-back games Weeks 12 & 13, is crushing. Palmer has thrown 18 interceptions this year against 21 TDs, and has generally been very inconsistent. He has 3 games of at least 340 yards and 5 games under 200. Henne has been a big disappointment in Miami this year, as they still struggle to find Dan Marino’s replacement over 10 years later. He has 15 picks against 13 TDs and has not sparked the offense despite having two very nice WRs in Brandon Marshall and Davone Bess. And Sunday’s performance, 5-18, was utterly putrid. |
| Darren McFadden…16 carries for 123 yards; 2 TDs, 3 rec, 86 yds, 1 TD. Seeing the highlights from this game, I couldn’t believe how much McFadden has improved from his rookie year. I was always amazed at how he seemed to run with blinders on early in his career, as he ran with a fullback mentality - so strange for a speed guy. But seeing the highlights from Sunday, he looked awesome – good vision, breaking tackles, spinning, and of course, that same blazing speed. That 2008 NFL Draft gave us 3 nice RBs from Arkansas – McF, Felix Jones, and Peyton Hillis.
| Adrian Peterson…14 carries for 26 yds, no TDs; 0 recs. I’m very angry at AP, not only because he’s my stud RB in fantasy football (I’m out of the playoffs anyway), but more so because his awful effort took the Blair Thomas away from Ladainian Tomlinson, who with his 49 yds on 19 carries Sunday, made it 7 of the last 8 games he’s played rushing for under 4 yds/carry. Hang em up LT, you’re done. As for AP, he’s had a solid season (until this stinker), but not spectacular. Only 4 100 yard games, but just 1 since week 7. He takes quite a beating with his style, and he doesn’t produce the epic highlight runs near as often as he did his rookie year, when he had multiple ridiculous scampers. I don’t see him having the longevity of the greats, even though his 1st 3-4 years production is up there with some of the best. |
| DeSean Jackson…4 rec, 210 yds, 1 TD and 2 rushes for 6 more yards. Over 50 yds/catch!! Even taking his 91 yard TD out, he’s at almost 40 yds/catch…what a home run threat he is with blazing speed, and at only 5’10”175. Jackson is averaging 23.1 yds/rec this season on 42 catches, on pace to become the first WR since Ashlie Lelie in 2004 to have over 1,000 yds at more than 20 yds/rec. |
| Michael Crabtree…1 rec, 1 yds, 0 TD’s…Crabtree was the 10th pick of the 2009 NFL Draft and promptly held out the first ¼ of the season, wanting to be paid more than he was slotted for as the 10th pick. Well, whatever he was finally paid, so far it is way too much, as he has averaged just 42.7 yds/gm this season, including 6 games under 40 yards, and has just one 100 yard game in his career. |
| San Diego Chargers Defense…a shutout against the Chiefs, allowed only 67 total net yds, just 19 net passing yards, only 5 first downs, and absolutely dominated time of possession 40:10 to 19:50 in their 31-0 blowout in a crucial game to keep their playoff hopes alive. |
| Jay Feely…5 FGs, 3 from at least 48 yards out including a 55 yarder, and also ran for a 5 yard touchdown on a fake FG attempt. A dream day for the 10 year veteran kicker. |

NFL Awards - Week 12 of the 2010 Season
| Tom Brady…21-27, 341 yds, 0 picks, 4 TD passes…Nice game Tom, but what’s with the Jake Plummer look? So you’re not a pretty boy? Whatever…but thanks for the memories in 2007 – loved owning your stats that year. |
| Peyton Manning…31-48, 285 yds, 4 picks, 2 TDs…and… Rusty Smith…17-31, 138 yds, 3 picks, 0 TD. I hate Manning, and I’m a big fan of Rivers and the Chargers, so that was a beautiful outcome to see…but strangely, the Chargers scored 36 pts, and Phil had 0 TD passes…?? Love that two of Manning’s picks were taken to the house by Kevin Burnett and Eric Weddle. As for Rusty Smith – poor guy, he never was supposed to start this year. Injuries to Young & Collins in Tennessee have thrown him into battle prematurely as a 3rd string rookie out of Florida Atlantic. Who knows how he’ll be in a couple years, but he’s not ready now. |
| Jamal Charles…22 carries for 173 yards; 1 TDs, 2 rec, 3 yds. Charles is having a remarkable year (and basically getting no pub for it), with a strong chance to become just the 4th rusher in NFL history to average over 6 yds/carry and have over 1,300 yards rushing. The other three were just kinda decent – Jim Brown (6.4 in 1963), OJ Simpson (6.0 in 1973), and Barry Sanders (6.1 in 1997). Charles currently has 1,021 yards at 6.3/carry after 11 games, projecting to 1,485 on the year. He was almost at 6 last year, gaining 1,120 yds at 5.9 a rush. At only 200 lbs, he’s obviously very electric and a treat to watch. |
| Chris Johnson…7 carries for 5 yds, no TDs; 2 rec for 2 yds, 0 TDs. Johnson is not enjoying the success he had last year at all. His yds/carry has fallen from 5.6 to 4.4, his yds/gm has dropped from 125 to 88, and his rec yds have plummeted from 31/gm to 9. Instability/injury at QB & WR have not helped. Darren McFadden was also pretty poor Sunday, gaining only 2 yards on 8 carries, but did chip in 7 catches for 63 yards. |
| Dwayne Bowe…13 rec, 170 yds, 3 TD…What a run he is on!! 13 TDs in his last 7 games, and in his last 3, he’s averaging 10.7 recs, 155 yds, and 2.3 TDs!! The KC offense is something to be reckoned with, as Matt Cassel and Thomas Jones, in addition to Charles & Bowe, have led them to the #6 ranking in total offense, #1 at the rush, and a 7-4 record. |
| Andre Johnson…9 rec, 56 yds, 0 TD’s…Barely more than 6 yds a catch? Letting Cortland Finnegan get under your skin and losing your cool? Easy choice this week. |

NFL Awards - Week 10 of the 2010 Season
| Michael Vick…20-28, 333 yds, 0 picks, 4 TD passes, 8 rush, 80 yds & 2 TDs…Quite simply the best QB I’ve seen played…period. I was stuck on the freeway Monday morning, traffic so bad on the 5 North in Los Angeles that I had time to look at football box scores on the freeway, and it looked obvious that Matt Cassell (469 yds, 4 TDs, 0 Ints) was gonna win the Fouts…but the freaky Michael Vick had not played yet, and how he did play!!! An 88 yarder to open the game was just the beginning of a fireworks show that went thru 3 quarters and 59 points of mayhem on the Redskin defense. Vick turned multiple loss-of-1-yard plays into gains of 7+ yards with his feet and 4.3 speed, and the Redskin Def never knew what to do…his passes were lasers in the driving rain, freakishly accurate and flicked off the wrist with amazing velocity. Always kept his balance at the crucial moments as well, I’m not sure any athletic performance can fully rival what I saw Monday night…Jordanesque in its greatness. |
| Brett Favre…18-31, 170 yds, 3 picks, 1 TD…Go Away!!! We are tired of you Brett…go play in your Wrangler jeans with your buddies, but get out of the league, and stop w/ the goddamn drama every f-ing week with your injuries and good games/shitty games. We are tired of all it, the Viking franchise is completely destabilized because of you, and you need to leave the league immediately upon the end of this disastrous Vikings season. Oh, and Donovan McNabb’s 3 interceptions from Monday night, one of them a pick six, have to be mentioned as well…especially in light of the ridiculous contract he agreed to earlier in the day – will Dan Snyder ever learn from his past free agent mistakes? Guess not… |
| Fred Jackson…25 carries for 133 yards, 1 TDs, 6 rec, 37 yds, 1 TD. Kind of a ho hum running back with a ho hum name, Jackson has proven to be a solid player in the league, initially as Marshawn Lynch’s backup in Buffalo and now as the starter there while rookie CJ Spiller adjusts to life in the NFL (what an awful rookie year he’s had so far!). Jackson played his college ball at the notorious Div III football powerhouse Coe College, graduating in 2003. He then played in 2 different indoor leagues (but not the Arena League) the next two seasons before going to play a year in NFL Europe. He finally joined the Bills in 2006 as Marv Levy, a fellow Coe alum, invited him to training camp. In 2009 he rushed for over 1,000 yards – and who would have ever thought that he’d be a 1,000 yard rusher in the NFL after playing in 3 different minor leagues after leaving college? |
| Jahvid Best…17 carries for 35 yds, no TDs; 4 rec for 4 yds, 0 TDs…Best has been terribly quiet since his 3 TD performance in week 2. Battling turf toe in both toes, he has averaged less than 4 yds/carry in 5 of the 7 games since then, and never more than 4.5/carry. He has also failed to exceed 60 yards rushing in any of those games, nor 100 combined yards from scrimmage. He’s averaging only 3.1 yds/carry for the season, with just 5 total TDs, all scored in weeks 1 & 2. Cedric Benson (14 carries, 24 yds) and Ronnie Brown (12 carries, 11 yds) were also pretty poor Sunday. |
| Dwayne Bowe…13 rec, 186 yds, 2 TD…Kansas City, the best rushing team in the NFL going into their game last Sunday, fell behind 21-0 after 1 quarter of play, and 35-0 in the 2nd quarter before finally getting their offense in gear and just airing it out. Bowe & Cassel had career days in the process, as extended garbage time padded their stats immensely. This was only Bowe’s 2nd 100 gm this season, and only his third with at least 5 receptions (his first with more than 6). His stats project to barely clearing 1,000 yards this year, which would be the 2nd time in his four year career that he clears the 1,000 yard mark (1,022 yds in 2008). |
| Tie between Brandon Marshall…3 rec, 34 yds, 0 TD’s…and…Randy ‘The Human Decoy’ Moss…1 rec, 26 yds, 0 TD’s…Marshall has been pretty quiet with his new team Miami this year, scoring just 1 TD all season. On Sunday he was targeted 7 times but only nabbed 3 recs, his lowest total of the season. And now he has a 3rd string QB throwing to him in Tyler Thigpen after both Chad Henne and Chad Pennington (notoriously injury prone) went down with injuries. As for Moss, I remember once upon a time when QBs actually threw him the ball. He was targeted 4 times in the game, but only caught one, as his Hall of Fame career slowly fades into the twilight. Moss has caught only 23 passes in 9 games this season, visiting the end zone 5 times. For his career, he has eight 1,200 yard seasons, including his first 6 years in the league, and over 150 TDs. |

NFL Awards - Week 8 of the 2010 Season
by Todd "Speedburner" Robinson
| David Garrard…17-21, 260 yds, 0 picks, 4 TD passes, 2 rush, 2 yds & 1 TD…Yes, Garrard accounted for all 5 Jax TDs Sunday in leading the Jags to a burial of the suddenly hapless Dallas Cowboys. Garrard now has 9 TDs and just 2 picks since winning the Leaf Award in week 3…is he due for another Leaf-like performance soon, or is he reformed? We’ll see…Meanwhile, for all you Cowboy fans out there (Nick), better luck next year…at least you’ll get a high pick in the 2011 Draft. |
| Matt Hasselback…13-32, 160 yds, 1 pick, 0 TDs…The aging 35 yr old has been fading the last few years (rating ’08: 57.8, ’09: 75.1, ’10: 70.7, 34 picks only 28 TDs), but somehow has the Seahawks at 4-3 this year, despite scoring fewer points than every team in the league outside of Carolina and Cleveland. The Seattle rushing attack, at under 90 yds/gm, sits 26th in the league, and that certainly doesn’t help the matter. I still think ex-Cal Bear Justin Forsett is interesting, and he is at 4.5/carry so far. The other ex Bear in the Seahawks backfield, Marshawn Lynch (2.8/carry)…not interesting. |
| Jamaal Charles…22 carries for 177 yards, 0 TDs, 4 rec, 61 yds, 0 TD. 238 yards from scrimmage for the elusive speedster out of Texas in the 2008 Draft (tons of great backs from that draft). All season Charles has split carries with the newly acquired veteran Thomas Jones, only finally this week getting more than 16 rushing attempts in a game. Despite that, he is now 7th in the league in rushing with 666 yards (devil #) at a 6.5/carry clip!! Coming off his strong 2009 season (over 1,400 combined scrimmage yds, 5.9/carry), Charles has quietly established himself as a top 10 RB in the league. |
| Jonathan Stewart…14 carries for 30 yds, no TDs; 1 rec for 8 yds, 0 TDs…2010 has been a complete debacle for Stewart (178 yds at 2.8/carry in 7 gms!), his backfield mate DeAngelo Williams (6 gms, 361, 4.1, 1 TD), the entire Carolina offense (last at just 12 pts/gm), and the team as a whole (1-6 record). On top of that, Jonathan Stewart’s recent success at Oregon from 2006-07 is being immediately eclipsed by LaMichael James, the number #2 rusher in the NCAA right now after darting through my Trojan D for over 200 yards Saturday. |
| Brandon Lloyd …7 rec, 169 yds, 1 TD…Yet another monster outing from the mysteriously resurgent Lloyd, who as mentioned in the Week 3 Awards, had 4 straight terrible years before 2010 came along. I remember because I drafted him high in the first of those years, 2006. Lloyd is now leading the league with 878 yards receiving this year, 131 more than 2nd place (Roddy White). What is also amazing is his gaudy 20.9/rec average as he bids to become the first WR since Ashley Lelie in 2004 to gain over 1,000 yards while averaging more than 20 yds/rec. Mike Sims-Walker was also strong with 8 recs, 153 yds, and 1 TD. |
| Randy Moss…1 rec, 8 yds, 0 TD’s…In the NFL, draft picks are gold, as the brutal violence of the sport makes for lots of injuries and short careers. So for the Vikings to release Moss less than one month after giving up a 2011 3rd rounder for him…wow…I’m speechless! Someone’s head in the Vikings organization will roll…right? What a complete disaster this season has been for Minnesota. And who’s gonna take a flier on Moss? I say no one at his salary; he’ll clear waivers I’m guessing, then sign as a cheap F/A. |
| Mike Shanahan…1st of all, retread coaches almost NEVER work out (Gibbs?…Snyder, did that work?). Secondly, if you are going to yank your QB for poor play, be man enough to admit it, and stop thinking up retarded excuses like “he hasn’t mastered the 2 min offense” or “he’s not in good enough cardiovascular shape”. Do you think for a minute that ANYONE was gonna buy these pathetic, flimsy excuses pertaining to a longtime, accomplished, stand-up professional like Donovan McNabb? Unreal!!! Fire him Snyder…though of course, he’s as big a weasel as his coach, unfortunately for Redskin fans. |

NFL Awards - Week 6 of the 2010 Season
by Todd "Speedburner" Robinson
| Kevin Kolb …23-29, 326 yds, 1 pick, 3 TD passes…So the long-groomed Donovan McNabb successor has kept alive the Eagles QB controversy with his sharp play since subbing in for an injured Mike Vick in week 4. Overall, the 36th pick of the 2007 Draft (4th selection in round 2) from the University of Houston has garnered a QB rating of 98.3 so far this year, 2nd on the team to Vick’s 108.8. There were 2 QBs taken above him that year, Jamarcus Russell (woops!) 1st overall and Brady Quinn (woops again) 16th overall. Also, Redskins backup John Beck was taken just 4 picks later at 40th overall. Four QBs taken in the top 40 that year, only one of them worth the pick. So hard to draft QBs. |
| Jason Campbell …8-21, 83 yds, 2 picks, 0 TDs…Campbell just doesn’t seem to get it, despite having been given multiple opportunities with the Redskins and now Raiders since being drafted in the 1st round back in 2005. His QB rating this year is a putrid 61.1, with 4 picks and just 2 TDs, while his career rating is a 81.1 – decent, but nothing too stellar. I think Rich Gannon was the last decent Raider QB, as an aging but wily veteran in the early 2000’s. |
| Chris Ivory …15 carries for 158 yards, 0 TDs, 1 rec, 17 yds, 0 TD. Ivory played in the Pac 10 at Washington St. before transferring to the legendary Tiffin University for his senior year. He’s 6’ 0”, 222, and was signed by the Saints as a free agent this year. He runs a 4.47 40, but has had disciplinary issues in the past (that’s why he transferred), and the jury remains out on whether or not he’ll be an NFL flash in the pan, or a solid RB in the league for the next few seasons – we’ll see. |
| Jahvid Best …12 carries for 16 yds, no TD’s; 6 recs for 31 yds, 0 TDs…Best has had an up & down rookie year so far, garnering the Barry Sanders Award in week #2 and now taking home the Blair Thomas Award in week #6. He has turf toe in both toes, but the Lions have a bye in week 7, so the rest should help that heal a bit. He’s only averaging 3.2 yds/carry so far this year, and after scoring 5 TDs in the first two weeks of the season, he has none since. He is quite fast and electric in the open field, so hopefully the mediocre Lions O-Line can open up some holes for him starting in week #8.
| Jeremy Maclin …7 rec, 159 yds, 2 TDs…This is just Maclin’s 2nd 100 yard game in his career, his first coming early in his rookie season last year. He’s a former first round pick out of Missouri, and gives the Eagles a 2nd major playmaker at WR (along with DeSean Jackson) after going years without one (remember Todd Pinkston?). |
| Miles Austin…2 rec, 12 yds, 0 TD’s…Miles of Smiles was all frowns on Sunday after only being targeted 5 times all game. On one of those, he scored from over 60 yards out, only to have the TD nullified by an offensive penalty. Why would they only target their best offensive weapon just 5 times when the team is desperate for a win? Did you see his 61 yard TD from the week before? He jumped up and snatched the ball out of the air and away from two defenders, and then sprinted down the sideline for a TD. With superior size and speed to anyone in the picture, he looked like a high-schooler playing against the 8th grade team. Get him the ball!! |

NFL Awards - Week 4 of the 2010 Season
by Todd "Speedburner" Robinson
| Carson Palmer …25-36, 371 yds, 0 picks, 2 TD passes…This game comes as something of a surprise considering the moribund state of the Cincy passing attack lately. Coming into this game, Palmer was only 35-72, 362 yds, 2 picks, 1 TD in his prior two games. People had been talking about reduced arm strength, inaccuracy, old injuries…it was a long way from 2005, his breakout year in the league when he had 3,836 yards with 32 TDs and only 12 picks. The brutal part about that season was his first career playoff game, when very early he threw a long 50 yard bomb to the late Chris Henry, only to have his leg snapped on the play. Pittsburg went on to win the game and the Super Bowl that year. |
| Derek Anderson …7-14, 64 yds, 2 picks, 0 TDs…Somehow the Cardinals are 2-2 despite seemingly being a mess. They cut the guy they thought in early August would be their starting QB (Leinart), their ‘star’ tailback has been either injured or complaining about lack of carries (Beanie Wells), and they have been outscored this season 123 to 53. Anderson is an interesting tale, yet another bozo QB contract. Cleveland signed him to a 3 year, $24m deal after his breakout 2007 campaign (3,787 yds, 29 TDs, 19 ints), only to see him completely regress as a QB the next two years, before letting him go after last year. Of course, the Browns, if I’m not mistaken, actually traded up to take Brady Quinn in the 1 st round of the 2007 draft, only to give up on him a couple years later (now with Denver). They now sport has-been Jake Delhomme and career backup Seneca Wallace at QB – the search continues. |
| Ahmad Bradshaw …23 carries for 129 yards, 1 TDs, 2 rec, 14 yds, 0 TD. He has very quietly become one of the better, more exciting backs in the league. Very quick, fast, and elusive, he also showed great strength and willpower on his touchdown run Sunday night, carrying 3 Bears into the endzone with him the final 2 yards. LT was also nice Sunday with 133 yards and 2 TDs on only 19 carries, while Houston’s Arian Foster also impressed again, dashing 74 yards for a TD on his way to 131 yards on only 16 carries. |
Chris Johnson …19 carries for 53 yds, no TD’s; 3 recs for 11 yds, 0 TDs…and… Matt Forte…12 carries for 26 yds, no TDs; 2 recs for 7 yds, 0 TDs. This is the 2 nd week in a row for Forte, who’s slowly becoming gross. He has only 134 yards rushing on the year at a 2.7 avg, without any TDs. Without his receiving numbers (209 yds, 3 TDs), he’d be totally useless. Meanwhile, CJ2K (so named after his 2,006 rushing yds last year), is definitely not on pace for 2K this year, as he has just 354 yds while averaging only 3.8/carry. Last year he had 434 yards after 4 games, but remember, he closed the season with 11 straight 100 yd games, including one 200 yarder, 3 more over 140, and 3 more over 130.
Terrell Owens …10 rec, 222 yds, 1 TD. Jeez…I hate to do this, and never thought I’d have to do it again, as TO is in his 15 th season at age 36…but he still has it in him, I guess. Like most NFL fans, I can’t stand the guy, but his career numbers are quite impressive – 2 nd on the all-time rec yardage list (15,325 yds), 2 nd in rec TDs (145), and 5 th in receptions (1,030). But he’s a jerk. |
| Lee Evans …1 rec, 6 yds, 0 TD’s. Yes, the Buffalo Bills are in complete disarray, and haven’t had a good QB since Doug Flutie over 10 years ago, but what’s up with Evans? He only has 94 yards on 10 receptions so far this year. Is he slower now that he’s 29? Is he just checking out, as the Bills look to possibly be the worst team in the league this year? Who knows, but things are a mess up there. At least they finally traded Marshawn Lynch, who they’d been showcasing all season, at the expense of their #1 draft pick, the very electric CJ Spiller. Maybe now that he’ll get 15 touches a game, some life will be breathed into that repulsive offense. |
Josh Scobee ...1 FG, 4 extra points. The FG was 59 yards as time expired to avoid overtime and take down division rival Indianapolis…NICE!!! This was not a fluke either, as Scobee had 9 50+ yarders last year and 5 in 2008. For his career, he’s 13-23 from 50 plus. |
