Maple Leaf Roster Notes
It's been a few days since I've written anything, and a there have been several developments over the past couple days involving the Toronto Marlies roster...errr, I mean the Toronto Maple Leafs roster. Nik Antropov is expected back sooner than originally thought...errr, who knows when he'll be back.
Kyle Wellwood went from day-to-day to week-to-week with his groin injury. He is one player the Leafs definitely miss as he is one of the few who has an offensive upside. John Pohl has seen his ice time and production increase since taking a more offensive role in Wellwood's absence. Pohl is proving me wrong on my original assessment of giving him more ice time.
Darcy Tucker injured his foot and is questionable for tonight's game. Boyd Devereaux was called up in-case Tucker can't go. Yes, that would be the first round bust, journeyman forward Boyd Devereaux. Get well soon Darcy. I think if Tucker can put a skate on, he'll be playing. It would take a lot for Tucker to miss a game.
Mike Peca is out for a 3-4 months, although he stated yesterday he's looking at it as weeks and not months. Okay, we'll switch it to weeks then, he'll be out for 12-16 weeks. A cast will be on his leg for 6 weeks, there will be a ton of rehab for both his broken leg and knee injury.
Alexei Ponikarovsky is still out as well. So the

Peca Suffers Serious Injuries
The 3-1 loss to the Blackhawks last night is just a minor issue compared to the injury sustained by Mike Peca. Peca torn is MCL ligament in his right knee and fractured his tibia. Peca collided knee-on-knee with Jim Vandermeer, who was given a 5-minute major and a game misconduct. Leaf Jeff O'Neill was obviously not impressed with Vandermeer, "It's tough when you see a guy [Vandermeer] who can barely play in this league take out one of the best players in this league,"

Two Recalled
With the possibility of Kyle Wellwood and Alexei Ponikarovsky not being able to play tonight against the Blackhawks, forwards Ben Ondrus and Alex Suglobov were recalled from the Toronto Marlies. If both Wellwood and Ponikarovsky are unable to go, I don't see both Ondrus and Suglobov being inserted into the lineup. Wade Belak would most likely get the nod ahead of one of the two.

No Holiday Cheer at Leaf Practices
Tuesday's loss to the Florida Panthers was pretty painful, but not as bad as Maple Leaf practices have become. On Wednesday, Kyle Wellwood strained his groin muscle and is questionable for tonight's game. Yesterday it was Alexei Ponikarovsky's turn to injure himself. The big 225 pounder caught a rut in the ice and crashed heavily into the boards, injuring his left shoulder/upper arm. He immediately went to get x-rays, no word yet on the extent of the injury. So, Leaf practices have knocked 3 players out in the last couple of weeks. Nik Antropov has been out with an ankle injury after catching a rut in the ice. Maybe this is a sign to do something about the ice at their practice facility.

Not Leaf Related…But Funny
This is a pretty funny video clip from last year about Jamie McLennan, then of the Florida Panthers, on being the backup for Roberto Luongo.

Not the Net thing Again?

Increasing the size of the ice would be a better option, as it would give players more room to maneuver. Problem with this is that owners would have to take out a few rows of the expensive seats, so this won't happen. I'm not saying to make it the Olympic size, but a bit larger would help open up the game.

Wellwood Injures Groin
Kyle Wellwood left yesterday's practice earlier than expected with a suspected groin injury. Maurice doesn't think that it is too serious and he should be able to go Friday against Chicago.

4 in a Row? And that Would be Wins
The Leafs are looking to build upon they're decent play of late and win their fourth game in a row. Yes, a four game 'winning' streak. With the Florida Panthers coming to town, their odds of winning their fourth in a row are a bit easier. The Leafs may get the opportunity to tee it up against former Leaf netminder, Eddie Belfour. There shouldn't be any hostility towards Eddie, as it was Leaf management's decision to buy him out. Eddie will definitely be pumped if he's given the opportunity to face his former team in Toronto, wanting to prove to them that they made a mistake. This will be the 3rd meeting between the two teams this season. The Leafs took the opener in Toronto back on October 9th in a 2-1 shootout victory. Alex Auld stood on his head that night, making 47 saves. Belfour earned a 4-2 victory against the Leafs on November 2nd in Florida. He was named the games 3rd star, stopping 24 shots.
The Leafs dodged a bullet with Darcy Tucker, as his hand appears to be fine after blocking a shot on Saturday. Tucker left the game Saturday, and there were fears that he might have broken a bone or two in his hand, but x-rays came back negative.
