That Was a Beating and a Half
Well last night's game was not what I expected, and probably didn't cross anyone else's mind either. For the final 40 minutes the Leafs completely dominated the awe struck Boston Bruins, outscoring them 9-0 in the final two frames. Boston took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission, out shot the Leafs 15-7, giving viewers the impression that it could be a long night for Leaf fans. I am curious as to what was said in the Leafs dressing room during the first intermission because they really let the Bruins have it from then on. The Leafs were arguably missing 5 of their top 6 forwards: Tucker, Peca, Wellwood, Ponikarovsky and Antropov were all out with injuries. More surprising was who led the charge in the onslaught. Alex Steen and Matt Stajan had career nights. Steen netted his first NHL hat-trick, added 2 assists and was a +6 in only 17:04 minutes. Stajan potted 2 goals and 2 assists and was a +4. Bates Battaglia added 2 goals and Boyd Devereaux added 3 assist, recording points in his first 4 games with the Leafs (proving me wrong in a previous post). Ian White had solid game with 2 assists and a +6 rating.
On the other side of the fence, it's not a surprise that some Bruins players put up some interesting stats. In less than 17 minutes of play, P.J. Axelsson was a -5. Boston had 5 players that were -4.
One aspect of the Leafs game that stood out in my opinion was the outlet passes from the Leafs defenseman. They made quick, bang on passes to hit streaking forwards up the boards or down the middle. If they were being pressured, they stayed cool, made a small move to avoid the forechecker, and then made the pass. Too often in the past, they would feel the pressure, and then dump it up the boards or into the neutral zone without looking. Kaberle is one of the best in the league at calmly avoiding the forecheck and making a solid breakout pass. Ian White has also impressed me in this area.

This Makes Me Laugh…
I was looking at the player stats for the Boston Bruins when I started chuckling to myself. I came across the name Zdeno Chara. Every time I read or hear his name, I think back to when he rag-dolled Bryan McCabe back in January of 2004. I wonder if the Leaf players ride McCabe about this every time they face Chara.Posted by Mark in

First Game in Awhile Against the Bruins Tomorrow…
So heading into game number 42 tomorrow night, the Leafs will have played the Boston Bruins 7 times this season. The Leafs are 2-4 so far against the Bruins. Starting Saturday night against Buffalo, the Leafs will play the Sabres 6 times from then until March 23rd. At least the Sabres are a lot more entertaining to watch than the Bruins.
Boyd Devereaux has 3 points in 3 games since being called up from the Marlies. Don't expect him to keep up that pace.
Kyle Wellwood might return on Saturday against the Sabres. He's been out with a groin/hip flexor injury. It doesn't appear that they are rushing him back; groin/hip injuries can be easily re-aggravated.
Monday's 5-1 win over the Bruins was the first time since November 24th against the Capitals that the Leafs allowed 1 goal or fewer, a span of 16 games allowing 2 or more goals. They were 4-12 during that stretch, including a 7 game losing streak.

Plays of the Week and Stevie Y’s Number Retired
Last night Steve Yzerman had his jersey number raised to rafters of Joe Louis Arena. Playing an entire career with the same team doesn't happen that often anymore, which is too bad. Sakic, Modano and Brodeur are a couple that come to mind who will most likely play their entire career with the organization who drafted them.

Leafs - Boston Highlights from Monday
I'm a day late with the video highlights, but better late than never. Whoever posts the NHL highlights in youtube took some time off during the holidays, as no videos were uploaded for several days, and the previous nights highlights weren't up until yesterday afternoon.Posted by Mark in
