DiPietro Stones the Leafs

Even with recording twice as many shots as the Islanders, the Leafs still couldn't pull out a victory. When all was said and done, the Leafs fell 3-2 after losing the shootout, even though they recorded 41 shots on Rick DiPietro. After surrendering two goals in 27 seconds to Hunter and Satan, Bates Battaglia scored his 10th of the season on a nifty backhander to tie the score at 2 with 11 minutes to play in the second. This is when DiPietro stole the show.

After allowing Battaglia's goal, DiPietro made 25 consecutive saves. The Isles were out shot 16-1 in the third period which was totally dominated by the Leafs in every aspect of the game. DiPietro made a spectacular diving save on Kaberle's open net wrister.

Even though Raycroft only had 20 shots directed his way, he noted "That's by far the hardest game I've had to play this year," "You try and stay focused and we're pounding away at the other end, putting lots of shots on net. You've just got to stay in there and not let the next one in."

Nielsen and Kozlov scored in the shootout for the Isles, while only Sundin could manage to beat DiPietro. Ponikarovsky and Antropov looked like they weren't too interested in being a part of the shootout. Both players basically skated in a straight line towards the net and fired a wrist shot from beyond the hash marks into DiPietro's pads, who didn't really have to move at all.

The victory by the Isles tied them with the Leafs for 9th place in the conference with 62 points, both have 25 games remaining. Both are 2 points back of Montreal for 8th spot, and 5 points back of Pittsburgh for 4th spot.
