What are the Leafs chances of making the playoffs after the trade deadline?

The Struggles Continue

The brain trust of this organization has decided that changes are not necessary to get this team out of their funk. They considered over the weekend about calling someone up, but Maurice feels they don't need to make a trade or a call up. According to Maurice "I'm shaking them up pretty good in there,". He is definitely shaking the lines up, but he's not getting them to play solid, consistent hockey for 60 minutes. I don't think Maurice is doing a bad job coaching the Leafs, he just doesn't have a lot to work with. This team exceeded expectations at the beginning of the year, winning more games than anyone thought they would to start the season. Not many people picked them to make the playoffs, myself included, and this is the track they are following.

The Leafs need to rebuild. I can suffer through a few bad seasons if they are committed to the rebuilding process. It is frustrating watching a team that is at the cap limit, with not a whole lot of young prospects, miss the playoffs. They potentially have some solid young defenseman, but playing time for them will be limited in the NHL. The Leafs handcuffed themselves in the off-season, signing McCabe to monstrous long term contact, overpaying Kubina for 4 years, and adding the giant Gill for 3 years. Something like $17 million is tied up in the Leafs top 4 defenseman. That's way to much for 3 questionable D-men, Kaberle is excluded. The Leafs need to accumulate some young offensive forwards, either through trades, or through additional draft picks they acquire.
