That was an uneventful start to the season. You'd think that opening night, at home, against their arch rivals the Ottawa Senators, they might get up for this game. Apparently not. Ottawa showed why they will be aiming to play deep into the playoffs, while the leafs will be fighting for their lives just to make the playoffs. They out hustled, hit, and used their speed to their advantage over the sluggish Leafs.
Andrew Raycroft was decent in his Maple Leaf debut, but if the Leafs have any hope, they need Raycroft to stand on his head. This team does not have the offensive talent to get into a shootout with anyone. They will need to win games 2-1 and 3-2. It was a good thing that Mats Sundin was hauled down and awarded a penalty shot when he shouldn't have been, or the Leafs would have been shutout.
Wade Belak and Hal Gill were caught flat footed several times which cost the Leafs. The $7 million man, Bryan McCabe did not look good at all. This team didn't have much life, no spark plug to get them going. And no, I'm not going to even suggest they need Tie Domi, he can stay in the TSN studio. But I will suggest superpest Tyson Nash, recently waived by the Coyotes. The need someone who will hit, play with energy, and irritate the opposition. Sure the Leafs have Darcy Tucker and Mike Peca who can play that style, but unfortunately they will be needed to provide some much needed scoring.
