Kaberle Returning?

Leaf re-guard, Tomas Kaberle is hoping to return to the lineup on Tuesday against the New Jersey Devils. He will undergo a series of tests today and if doctor's give him medical clearance, he'll be playing.

With the Leafs in a dogfight for the final couple playoff spots, they definitely need him healthy and playing at the level he can. The team is struggling to score and getting their top offensive defenseman will only increase their chances of getting in the playoffs.

Kaberle Making Progress

Over the last couple of weeks the Leafs have been making progress on getting a complete healthy lineup, but as one returns, another seems to go down. Darcy Tucker and Kyle Wellwood have returned recently. The next Leaf that should be returning to the lineup is Tomas Kaberle. Yesterday Kaberle was symptom free after riding the stationary bike. Kaberle suffered a concussion on March 2nd, and should be given clearance to resume skating shortly.

Yanic Perreault was scratched from the lineup on Saturday with an 'upper body injury'. It's speculated that it's related to the abdominal surgery he had last summer. An undisclosed Leaf player is also injured, so it may depend on which one is in better shape to play tonight.

There have been no new developments on the Michael Peca front. Peca had been targeting to get into a couple games before the playoffs, but that still remains to be seen.

Kaberle Out with Concussion

Cam Janssen's cheap shot hit on Tomas Kaberle on Friday night has put the Leaf rear guard out for about 10 days with a concussion. As everybody knows, with concussions there is no definite time line. The lingering effects can stay with someone for longer than expected and it's not an injury where you want to rush someone back. Janssen got a 3 game suspension for the late hit; no penalty was called on the play as the refs did not see it.

Ian White will be stepping up in Kaberle's absence. Saturday White seen his ice time increase by over 8 minutes. He has been promoted to the number 1 power play unit, not bad for a player who was on the bubble of making the team coming into training camp this year.

Pohl Back in Action?

It is looking like John Pohl will return to the Leafs lineup tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers. He has missed the last 3 games with back spasms. The Leafs have lost all 3 of those games, one of them in OT and another in a shootout.

Kris Newbury, who was knocked unconscious last Saturday after taking a couple punches to the head and banging his helmet-less head off of the ice, could be back practicing this weekend.

Newbury OK after being KO’d

If you had never heard of Kris Newbury before this past Saturday night, you probably know who he is now. Newbury got into a third period fight with Pittsburgh's Ronald Petrovicky, took a few good shots in the head, and then crashed to the ice. After watching the replays of the fight, it appears that he was knocked out before the back of his unprotected head hit the ice. There was a pool of blood on the ice, and he was taken off the ice on a stretcher.

It was definitely a scary moment to witness. But it seems that everything is alright with Newbury and he is only listed as day-to-day. He is not experiencing any post concussion symptoms, and was riding a stationary bike yesterday. They will not rush him, keeping him out of the lineup for about a week. He is sporting a few stitches by his lip, and staples at the back of his head.

Petrovicky was concerned about Newbury, prompting Petrovicky to call him on Sunday. Newbury sees the incident as just an accident, and will not shy away from dropping the gloves in the future.

Tucked Still Hobbled

While Leaf players are excited about their improved play of late, Darcy Tucker's frustration has to be increasing. The gritty winger who was leading the team in goal scoring at the time of injury, Dec. 28th, is still sporting a cast on his left foot. It will be at least 2 weeks before he is able to come back. If he was able to come back in 2 weeks from today, that would be Feb. 16th, 11 days before the trade deadline. If the Leafs continue to play well, I don't see them trading Tucker.

Things Not Looking Up for Tucker

There doesn't appear to be any good news on the Darcy Tucker injury front, actually, it regressed. He showed up today to practice wearing a cast. No timetable has been set on his expected return to the lineup. This new scenario hurts the Leafs in 2 ways. Firstly, he's one of the top players on the team, who desperately need his scoring touch and grit. If they are to get into the playoffs, they need him healthy and in the lineup. The second way it hurts the Leafs, if they choose to go this route, is that his trade value is decreasing. The trade deadline is approaching and if he is out for an extended period of time, teams may not want to chance giving up prospects or high draft picks.

Surgery for Wellwood

So I've questioned in the past the people that the Maple Leafs hired to make the ice at both the ACC and the Lakeshore Lions Arena. There have been at least 3 injuries that have occurred as a result of bad ice. Now I'm calling into question the doctors that the Leafs have hired. A month ago Kyle Wellwood was injured, he's barely skated since, and now will be out for another 6 to 8 weeks. His original diagnosis was a groin/hip injury, but a month later it has been determined that a sports hernia and will undergo surgery today. A month to figure this out! So if these doctors determined this injury when Wellwood was originally hurt, he'd be returning in a couple. Instead, he'll miss most of their remaining 33 games.

Another Leaf Goes Down

Ian White is the latest Maple Leaf to go down with an injury. He was chasing after a potential icing call, battling for position with a Hurricane player, tripped and crashed into the boards, injuring his shoulder. He lay on the ice for several seconds before skating off, holding his arm to keep it from further doing damage to shoulder. After the game, White said he had a mild shoulder separation, with further tests being conducted today to determine the extent of it.

White's injury brings up 2 issues. First is the ice surface at the ACC (and their practice facility). As White was getting close to the boards in his own end, his skate caught a rut, causing him to tumble over.
"I haven't seen a tape but guys said my skate was in a rut," said White. "I was going straight and all of a sudden, I guess the rut turned a little bit and I didn't do so well."
White wasn't the only one to hit a rut in the ice last night, Colaiacovo bailed after hitting one, the same goes for several Hurricane players. How many players have to get hurt at the ACC and at practice? White joins Antropov, Ponikarovsky and Wellwood who have been injured this season (all out because of it at the moment) by catching a rut. MLSE makes tons of money and could easily afford to put in better ice. But why do they sit back and watch Leaf after Leaf get hurt because of bad ice? McCabe has been vocal all season about how bad it is.

The second issue I have with regards to White's injury and is something that could have prevented the injury, no-touch icing. I'm obviously not the first person to bring this up, as it's mentioned every time a player crashes into the boards heavily while trying to get the icing call, or negate it. Some ankles have been broken, concussions, shoulder injuries, all as a result of touch icing. Shouldn't the league be trying to protect its players? What if Sidney Crosby broke his leg while trying to negate an icing? Would the NHL consider it then? I don't see the point of waiting to find out. Is the 2 seconds of excitement at the end of the chase worth losing a star play? The answer is simple, No! Gary Bettman and NHL executives should poll every player in the league to see if they want to have 'no-touch icing'. If the majority says they want it, you add it. Don't leave the decision up to people who are not playing the game, some of which who've probably never played hockey before.

Peca Suffers Serious Injuries

The 3-1 loss to the Blackhawks last night is just a minor issue compared to the injury sustained by Mike Peca. Peca torn is MCL ligament in his right knee and fractured his tibia. Peca collided knee-on-knee with Jim Vandermeer, who was given a 5-minute major and a game misconduct. Leaf Jeff O'Neill was obviously not impressed with Vandermeer,
"It's tough when you see a guy [Vandermeer] who can barely play in this league take out one of the best players in this league,"

No Holiday Cheer at Leaf Practices

Tuesday's loss to the Florida Panthers was pretty painful, but not as bad as Maple Leaf practices have become. On Wednesday, Kyle Wellwood strained his groin muscle and is questionable for tonight's game. Yesterday it was Alexei Ponikarovsky's turn to injure himself. The big 225 pounder caught a rut in the ice and crashed heavily into the boards, injuring his left shoulder/upper arm. He immediately went to get x-rays, no word yet on the extent of the injury.

So, Leaf practices have knocked 3 players out in the last couple of weeks. Nik Antropov has been out with an ankle injury after catching a rut in the ice. Maybe this is a sign to do something about the ice at their practice facility.

Wellwood Injures Groin

Kyle Wellwood left yesterday's practice earlier than expected with a suspected groin injury. Maurice doesn't think that it is too serious and he should be able to go Friday against Chicago.

McCabe Sprains Ankle

image
Bryan McCabe caught a rut in the ice behind the Leafs net in the third period, and left the game with a mild, left ankle sprain. As he was hobbling to the bench, Marco Sturm scored to put the Bruins up 3-1. McCabe hopes to play in tomorrow night's game against the Thrashers, but a better understanding of the severity of the injury won't come until later today or early Thursday morning. If McCabe is unable to go, Brendan Bell could step into the lineup. He's been a healthy scratch since Pavel Kubina returned from injury. Calling up Carlo Colaiacovo is also an option. Jay Harrison cleared waivers yesterday and was assigned to the Toronto Marlies.

Kaberle Misses Practice

Tomas Kaberle was absent from today's morning practice. A flu has been going around the Maple Leafs dressing room, with Kaberle the latest victim. He is expected to play tomorrow night against the Bruins.

Sundin Close to Returning

The fast healing Mats Sundin may have pulled another one out the hat. Sundin is hoping to return to the Leafs lineup this Saturday against the Boston Bruins. This would be a big boost to the Leafs, as they have scored 13 goals in his 4 game absence, but only 2 in the last 2 games, both were 2-1 loses. If Sundin returns on Saturday, he will have only been out of the lineup for 19 days, missing 7 games. His recovery time was estimated between 3 and 4 weeks.
