Sundin Out 3-4 Weeks

Leafs G.M. John Ferguson was just on 'The Fan 590' and said that Mats Sundin will be gone for approximately 3-4 weeks with a slight ligament tear in his right elbow. Thankfully the elbow will not require surgery, which would probably have lead to a more significant amount of time missed. The injury occurred when he took a hit while circling the Flyers net, as I speculated in a previous post today. Ferguson didn't say who will take over the number 1 center spot. I think Wellwood will be inserted into Mats position centering Antropov and Ponikarovsky.

Sundin Won’t be in the Lineup Against Boston

It appears that Mats Sundin won't be making the trip to Boston with the rest of his teammates for tomorrow night's game against the Bruins. Sundin suffered the mysterious 'upper body' injury during Monday's 4-1 victory. I'm guessing that the injury occurred when he was hit coming around the net in the Flyer zone. It looked like he took the brunt of it on his arm/shoulder, and showed an immediate reaction of displeasure. A better update on his status should be revealed later today.

Defense Could be Getting Crowded Soon

Including tonight's game against the Philadelphia Flyers, Maple Leaf defenseman Pavel Kubina will have missed the past 14 games. He took part in an opitional skate yesterday and is hoping to return to the lineup for Thursday's game against the Boston Bruins. After watching Wade Belak try to play defense, the Leafs (and fans) are licking their lips over Kubina's return.

Staffan Kronwall also took part in yesterday's practice. He's still at least a week away with a sprained ankle. My guess is that he'll be sent to the Marlies on a conditioning stint, as management decides who will remain with the team. Ian White and Brendan Bell are the 2 most likely candidates to be displaced if Kronwall stays with the big club, but both have been playing well as of late so it may be hard for Kronwall to crack the lineup.

IR for Tellqvist

Mikael Tellqvist, playing with the Toronto Marlies, was placed on injured reserve Saturday night. His 2 week conditioning stint was about too expire and Ferguson has been unable to trade him.

Pavel Kubina and Staffan Kronwall are close to being able to begin skating.

Nik Antropov returned to the lineup Saturday night, playing just over 5 minutes.

Broken Finger for Calaiacovo

After blocking a shot with his hand over the weekend, it was revealed that Carlo Colaiacovo has a non-displaced fracture in one of his fingers. The injury doesn't appear to be long term, but it is not known when Carlo will be able to return to action.

No Luck for Carlo

This is almost becoming comical, Carlo Colaiacovo getting injured. During the closing minutes of the second period of yesterdays game, Colaiacovo blocked a shot with his hand. The extent of the injury is not known yet, but he did not return for the third period. He was having a good game, recording a goal and assist, in a 4-3 victory.

It must be extremely frustrating for Carlo and for the organization. He's been one of their top prospects since he was drafted 5 years ago in the first round. Each year he enters training with high expectations, but each year he gets hurt. Will he ever be healthy enough to become a regular on the Leafs blueline? Do the Leafs give up on him, believing he's too injury prone? Trading him might be risky proposition since he has such a high upside. But on the other land, he may never be healthy enough to play an entire season. His career was in jeopardy after the concussion he suffered last season. I don't think that they would be able to get equal value for his skill and potential, due to all the injuries he's endured over his short career. Hopefully, this latest injury isn't serious, and he'll be able to show Leaf management and fans that he can stay healthy and produce at the NHL level.

Peca Hopeful for Tonight

Mike Peca took part in practice yesterday, testing out his injured hip. No decision has been made yet if he'll play tonight, as it will depend on he feels today.

Nik Antropov has been doing laps and will soon begin stops and starts. Don't push it too hard Nik.

Injury Timelines:
Carlo Colaiacovo - out indefinitely with headaches
Staffan Kronwall - out another week or two with an ankle injury from a Danny Heatley slash
Pavel Kubina - out at least another 3 weeks with a sprained knee ligament
Andy Wozniewski - out 4-6 months with a dislocated shoulder
Ben Ondrus - day-to-day with bruised ribs. Is skating now
Nik Antropov - about a week away, but you never know with Antropov

Peca Optimistic, Maurice Cautious

Mike Peca missed practice again yesterday and it appears unlikely that he will suit up for tomorrow nights game against the Colorado Avalanche. He is hoping that he'll be able to go, but they don't want to rush him back, as he hasn't skated since Thursday. Peca missed a portion of last season, as he tried to play through a similar injury. As the Leafs top defensive specialist, it's imperative that he is healthy throughout the year if the they want to challenge for a playoff spot. This Leafs lineup, and organization, doesn't have the depth to miss key players for an extended period of time.

Ben Ondrus returned to practice after suffering bruised ribs, and skated with Bates Battaglia and Alexander Suglobov. John Pohl skated in Peca's place with Chad Kilger and Alex Steen.

Nik Antropov is skating but not taking part in full practices. Antropov has been out, what seems like for months, with a sprained ankle. It's been well documented that he's injury prone and a slow healer.

I heard the rumor again today from one of Toronto's sports networks, that the Maple Leafs could be interested in signing defenseman Brian Leetch. The Leafs are about $600,000 under the salary cap, and it's reported that Leetch is looking for $1 million.

Peca Day-to-Day

Mike Peca missed Saturday's game against Calgary with a hip flexor problem. It originally occured in the pre-season and is not considered serious but the extra rest is needed. Pece should be able to return to the lineup in time for Wednesday game against the Colorado Avalanche.

At least 4 Weeks for Kubina

Pavel Kubina will be lost for at least 4 weeks with a strained MCL in his left knee. Although it's never good to lose your number three defenseman and top off-season free agent acquisition, but the damage could have been a lot worse. If the ligament was torn, which was my initial thought, it would require surgery and months of rehab. Instead, no surgery is currently required, only rest and rehab.

It looks like in the short term, Wade Belak will move back to the point. Brendan Bell may not be ready for Thursday. If they were to call someone up from the minors, it would probably be either Brad Brown or Mark Moro.

Bell’s Foot Not Broken

Results from tests on Brendan Bell's foot, revealed only a bone bruise and no fractures. He's in a walking cast and on crutches, but hopes to be able to play this weekend.

The league is reviewing Danny Heatley's slash to see if it warrants a suspension or fine. I think he should get suspended, only a game or two though. The two hander started well above his shoulders, with the intent to hit Bell. The league need to protect all it's players better, and not just the stars.

Another Injury

Staffan Kronwall crashed feet first into the boards and suffered an ankle sprain or strain in the first period. He left the game and did not return.

Mats Sundin scored a goal and assisted on 2 others in last nights 5-1 victory over the Montreal Canadians. Kyle Wellwood playing on Sundin's left wing, chipped in with 2 assists.

From the Infirmary

Well it didn't take long for the injuries to start occurring. Off-season free agent acquisition Pavel Kubina suffered a hip flexor injury last night in the first period. The seriousness of it should be known sometime later today or tomorrow.

Tomas Kaberle has a sore groin, Wade Belak has a hip injury, and Carlo Colaiacovo has been out since the Leafs first workout. There was some positive news about Colaiacovo's situation, as it appears his latest bout of 'wooziness' and headaches were not related to the concussion he suffered last season. At the moment, it's not known what is causing these symptoms.
