It was announced yesterday that Kyle Wellwood would take Mats Sundin's spot as the number one center, while Sundin recovers from his elbow injury. Wellwood has been playing wing all season, but is a natural centerman, so the switch shouldn't be too difficult for him. This didn't come as much of surprise considering the options that the Leafs have at center.
Michael Peca doesn't have the offensive skills anymore to be a number one center, a position where you would like to have your most talented offensive players. Matt Stajan's name was mentioned on a few news casts as a possible replacement, but he is still figuring out the offensive side of his game and doesn't need the added pressure. His game is coming along nicely this year as the number three center. Having Nik Antropov's switch back to center was another option mentioned, but he shouldn't be a number one winger, never mind a number one centerman. Wellwood was really the only choice they had to fill Mats's position. He has a tremendous offensive upside and has shown that this season, despite his recent struggles to get on the score sheet. It's a pretty sad number one line though, Wellwood-Ponikarovsky-Antropov, it could be the worst in the entire league.
