Is the Passion in Hockey Missing?

Following the Darcy Tucker - Sean Avery incident the other week, Damian Cox wrote this EPSN article Hockey's 'violence dilemma' again at the forefront. This sparked some email conversations with friends about the this so called violence in hockey. Here are a few good points that were made, followed by a video that every Leaf fan and/or hockey fan in general will certainly enjoy.

“At least the violence in hockey plays out in the game, instead of the streets and in strip clubs like it seems to do with football and basketball players...”

"Anyone who doesn’t understand what guys like Wendel Clark, Bob Probert, Tie Domi, Ron Hextall and a good line brawl brings to the game – doesn’t understand the sport or the business of the hockey. I know the perception is that Americans won't accept Hockey because of the violence, but Bettman and Co. have it all wrong. That is EXACTLY how they should be promoting the sport in the US.

Seriously, millions of viewers watch television every Sunday, with the sole purpose of seeing a race car driver flip his car 46 times before slamming into a concrete wall at 200 mph."

There was a big difference in the eighties etc. when you consider what fighting brought to hockey...it was a passion and guys like Wendel (Clark) didn't fight just to make the crowd cheer..Wendel fought because he was passionate about the game and winning and you sure as hell didn't see him pat a guy on the helmet after a fight...it leaves an empty feeling when two of todays goons square off, hold jerseys, and go to the box after with a smile on thier face like they did a good says "work"..watch this video and if you grew up watching the Leafs (sorry Ian..) tell me all the hair on your body doesn't tingle at least 5 times as you reconnect with memories of Saturday night watching passionate hockey and realize what is really missing in "the new NHL"..enjoy
