Memphis Grizzlies have been shopping their star forward Rudy Gay for a trade. Check out this report by Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.
The Grizzlies have been shopping Gay to multiple teams, and found an interested trade partner with the Suns, sources said.
There’s no framework of a possible deal in place, but the Grizzlies have expressed a strong desire that any package involving Gay include Suns forward Jared Dudley and future first-round draft picks, sources said.
Memphis is trying to shed salary as they are trying to not get past the luxury tax threshold. Gay’s salary is nearly $16.5 million this season. Next season, he will be paid nearly $18 million and, two years from now, he can get paid $19.3 million should he choose to take the option on that contract. The Grizzlies also have long-term deals with Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol, and Mike Conley so having Rudy Gay around would definitely put them above the luxury tax.
As for Phoenix, they need a go-to scorer badly and Gay would fit the bill. Even then, it’s not often the Suns’ ownership takes a huge contract like Gay’s; Suns owner Robert Sarver is not known as a big spender. I also feel like the Grizzlies can get a better deal than Jared Dudley and picks if they’re trying to win now. Dudley is a very good defender and can actually help the Grizzlies in terms of perimeter shooting but he is in no way an upgrade over Gay.
According to Wojnarowski’s article, Memphis’ new ownership doesn’t know if this present team can contend for a championship. I personally think that, while flawed, the Grizzlies are a scary, scary team to contend with since they have incredible defense and are built for the rigors of the postseason.
Memphis is 22-10 at the moment. They currently have the fourth best record in the West.
