The San Antonio Spurs always seem to find a way to stay in contention and, at times, get better. It’s so unfair in the NBA, sometimes, on how the rich can get richer.
Well, there seems to be another excellent player in the Spurs’ radar. In fact, this was found in Marc Spears’ Yahoo! NBA Power Rankings. Check this nugget out from the Atlanta Hawks section:
The Spurs are among the teams with interest in Hawks forward Josh Smith, a source told Yahoo! Sports. Keep in mind, Hawks general manager Danny Ferry was previously with the Spurs.
I don’t know who the Spurs would give up here but Josh Smith with the San Antonio Spurs?! Unfair, isn’t it? Knowing the Spurs, they’ll find a way to trade only draft picks or burritos to pry Smith out of the Hawks.
But all kidding aside, Josh Smith has been in trade rumors seemingly every season. The latest one had the Brooklyn Nets going after him. The proposed deal would include little-used Marshon Brooks and Kris Humphries, whose playing time has decreased as of late. That’s likely not going to be enough for the Hawks but they will keep looking for deals.
Why are the Hawks looking for deals for Smith? Smith is a free agent after this season and wants something close to a max deal (or the max deal itself). Atlanta isn’t too sure about re-signing him for that amount of money but, at the same time, they don’t want to lose him for nothing. They may also deal him for expiring contracts so they can have plenty of cap space for next season to sign the marquee free agents. It’s likely they won’t be able to sign Chris Paul or Dwight Howard (or both) but there are plenty of good players in next summer’s free agent pool.
