NFL News: Osi Umenyiora Will Pursue Starting Role With Another Team

NFL: New York Giants at Washington RedskinsThe 2012 NFL season and Super Bowl title defense is officially over for the New York Giants with the Washington Redskins coming out on top in the NFC East. The Giants had a slight chance of clinching a playoff spot this past weekend, but too scenarios didn’t come out in their favor.

As a result of the season ending in disappointing fashion for the Giants, there may be some drastic changes in New York starting with two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora leaving the team for an opportunity start for another squad.

The 31-year-old is ready to part ways with the Giants after 10 years in New York. Umenyiora isn’t satisfied with playing a backup role for the Giants anymore and believes it’s time to head elsewhere via Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPNNewYork.com:

“I feel fortunate to be able to play 10 years in New York,” he said on The Michael Kay Show. “It was a great run. I think now is probably time to move on.”

Umenyiora is seeking a new lucrative contract and a starting position — both of which will likely take place elsewhere.

The writing has been on the wall in New York for quite some time with Umenyiora and the Giants’ coaching staff not exactly seeing eye-to-eye over the past few years. The one-time All-Pro will more than likely have his fair share of offers from a number of different teams during the off-season, but it remains to be seen whether or not he’ll be given the ideal situation in terms of being a starting defensive end and playing for a championship-caliber football team.

As for the Giants, New York may also make an offer to retain the veteran defensive end, but if the Giants continue to play him in a limited capacity, he’ll like refuse to accept anything less than a starting role along with a lucrative deal.
