Raptors’ Amir Johnson Suspended One Game For Incident With Ref

Well, we got the result of the Amir Johnson incident from Monday night.

It was a most unusual ejection. It happened at Portland when the Raptors faced off against the Blazers. J.J. Hickson just made his first foul shot. Referee David Jones got the basketball after the shot. Everything was normal then.

Amir Johnson then wanted to touch the basketball so he tried to get a hold of it. It surprised the official so he tried to take away the ball from the player. Johnson, for some reason, would not let go. They fought over the ball before Jones had enough and threw Johnson out of the game.

It was then Amir Johnson went nuts. As players and assistant coaches held him back, Johnson threw his mouthpiece at the official and hit him on the back. All of this happened because Amir Johnson wanted to touch the basketball after a made free throw. Amazing.

Johnson was apologetic after the game. Via ESPN:

“I guess the ref didn’t let me have the ball so we kind of got into a tug of war,” he said. “No words were really said and he rejected me out of the game and I kind of lost my cool from there.”

Johnson agreed that it was unusual for him to act out.

“My teammates know me, my parents know me. … I never lose my cool. I never said anything to a ref or got mad,” he said. “The only techs I’ve gotten were for hanging on the rim or slapping the backboard.”

It was good for him to admit that he lost his cool for some reason. But that will go down as one of the more unusual ejections (and suspensions) in league history.

Amir Johnson is averaging 7.1 points and 5.4 boards this season. He will miss the Raptors’ home game against the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday night.
