Report: Kobe, Howard Had Heated Exchange After Loss To 76ers

NBA: Los Angeles Lakers at Washington WizardsSo the Lakers are losing and at some point, there has to be discord in the ranks, right? Well, according to this report in the New York Daily News, there was a diva battle between Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant.

Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant just can’t get along, and there’s a team in Brooklyn that might be waiting to pick up the pieces.

A league source told the Daily News that the Lakers stars got into a heated exchange following a New Year’s Day loss to the 76ers, and Bryant went for a low blow – referencing and agreeing with Shaquille O’Neal’s criticisms of Howard being soft.

Howard was restrained from going at his teammate, according to the source, and there have been rumblings from the center’s camp that he’s been unhappy with Bryant since earlier in the season.

There will always be disagreements in relationships. Couples always engage in arguments. Players and coaches will disagree on some plays. And I dislike that my bosses make fun of my musical tastes.

I’m sure there’s been some disagreements between Kobe and Dwight, but I doubt that it got this far. First of all, while I don’t want to question people’s integrity, shouldn’t we have heard this by now? It’s been almost a week since that game against the Sixers. Why bring this out now? Second, this was reported by a New York paper and we haven’t heard this from any L.A. beat writer, reporter, or paper. And, of course, we can’t forget that the Brooklyn Nets have pined for Dwight Howard for a while now. Of course, they’ll take this opportunity to make things worse than they already are.

This report has already been refuted by a couple of other reliable sources. Off RealGM.Com‘s Jarrod Rudolph’s Sulia:

For those wondering, I was told on Thursday that the rumor of a Dwight-Kobe altercation was nothing more than talk.

And then there’s Ramona Shelburne of ESPN L.A.:

So take this report as a grain of salt. However, on the off chance that it is true, does it really matter? The team is 15-18. They’re a bad basketball squad as of now. Although there may have to be a few worries because, if the incident was true, what if that helped Dwight Howard’s mind in terms of leaving the Lakers this summer?

The truth will eventually come out. But bottom line is that, no matter if this incident was true or not, the Lakers are not in a good spot right now.
