The Phoenix Suns are trying to restructure their roster as they work towards the future. Adrian Wojnarowski has the story for Yahoo! Sports.
As the Phoenix Suns try to reshuffle their roster for the future, their front office remains motivated to try to acquire New York Knicks guard Iman Shumpert, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
The Suns are willing to give New York a package that includes forward Jared Dudley and possibly a future first-round pick for Shumpert, but the Knicks have so far shown no inclination to do such a deal, sources said.
It feels like it makes sense for both teams but I just don’t see the Knicks doing it. Dudley is a very good NBA player but he’s already hit his ceiling. Dudley isn’t exactly the most athletic guy in the NBA but is an irritant on the defensive end. Plus he can shoot the three-ball as he is shooting .391 from behind the arc. He’s a smart player and will play whatever role it takes. Jared Dudley is the ultimate role player.
As for Shumpert, he is coming back from an ACL injury and is still on a limited basis. However, he is only in his second year and his athleticism is off the charts. He’s nowhere near the shooter Dudley is but it took time for Dudley to become a prolific shooter. But Shumpert is already a very good perimeter defender and the Knicks like his potential. The good news for Shumpert is that he’s not close to his ceiling and is on his rookie deal. The Suns want him as they look to get younger and rebuild.
Their salaries don’t match so the Knicks would have to include other contracts in the deal. While the Knicks do like Shumpert, they thought about including him in a sign-and-trade deal that would get them Steve Nash (the Lakers ended up getting him). We’ll see what happens before or on February 21st.
