Boston Bruins: GM Don Sweeney said that defenseman Kevan Miller is progressing and they haven’t ruled him out for the playoffs.

“Nothing definitive…we’re hopeful. The further we play, the more opportunity he has.”

Sweeney added that defenseman John Moore is available.

Ferland getting an update from the doctors

Michael Smith: Carolina Hurricanes forward Micheal Ferland didn’t practice yesterday. Coach Rob Brind’Amour on Ferland’s upper-body injury: “He went to see a doc. He was getting checked out. I’m hoping that will be the last time we have to talk about that, and he’ll be ready to go.”

Clutterbuck was playing with some serious back issues

Brett Cyrgalis of the NY Post: New York Islanders forward Cal Clutterbuck had been dealing with some injuries for the past two months.

“Stress fracture, rotated vertebrae, two slipped discs, pinched nerve,” is how Clutterbuck rambled off the things that are wrong during Monday’s breakup day on Long Island. “A couple things that need to be addressed in there, so I’ll go see a couple specialists and go from there.”

It doesn’t sound like the issues are career threatening. After he meets with doctors, it could range from four-to-six weeks up to four-to-six months if he needs a spinal fusion.

Hitchcock out as Oilers coach

Jack Michaels: Holland said that Ken Hitchcock won’t be back as the Oilers head coach next season.

Canucks won’t qualify Pouliot

Rick Dhaliwal: The Vancouver Canucks won’t be qualifying defenseman Derrick Pouliot. He’ll become an unrestricted free agent.

Maple Leafs and Flames sign left-handed defensemen

Toronto Maple Leafs: The Maple Leafs have signed left-handed defenseman Teemu Kivihalme to a one-year entry-level contract.

Darren Haynes: The Calgary Flames have signed left-handed defenseman Carl-Johan Lerby. His two-year entry-level deal won’t kick in until 2020-21. He’ll remain in Sweden next season.

McAvoy suspended

NHL Player Safety: Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy has been suspended for one game his illegal check to the head of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Josh Anderson.
