Raiders Rumors: Johnathan Abram To Miss Remainder Of Season After Tearing Rotator Cuff And Labrum

The Oakland Raiders got their season off to a strong start on Monday night, earning a big division win over the Denver Broncos at home.

Unfortunately, it came at a bit of a cost as Raiders cornerback Gareon Conley was carted off in the third quarter with a neck injury that he suffered after rookie safety Johnathan Abram fell onto him trying to record a tackle. Conley luckily avoided serious injury though and will be returning to the field soon, which is great news for the Raiders.

The was some bad injury news on the night as Abram appeared to have gotten injured at another point in the game. The injury was not made apparent after the win, but Adam Lefkoe of Bleacher Report is reporting on Tuesday night that Abram suffered a torn rotator cuff and labrum and is expected to miss the remainder of the season:

Raiders Rookie Safety Johnathan Abram tore his Rotator cuff and Labrum in the first quarter of last night’s game. He will have surgery this week…likely ending his season, per source.

This is obviously tough news for the Raiders and Abram, who was drafted in the first round out of Mississippi State. Abram did not get the start in his NFL debut, but he still made solid contributions in the win with five total tackles (one solo) and a pass defensed.

It was easy to see during HBO’s ‘Hard Knocks’ how much Abram loves playing football and hitting people so it is unfortunate that his season was cut short really before it even really started.

The Raiders defense was great against Joe Flacco and the Broncos, but they face a much tougher test in their Week 2 matchup against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Being without what looked to be a stalwart in their secondary will be challenging, so hopefully, Conley is able to at least return and play to aid that unit this weekend.
