Raiders Rumors: Keelan Doss Returning To Oakland After Receiving Offer ‘He Couldn’t Refuse’

One of the biggest surprises for the Oakland Raiders during training camp and the preseason was the emergence of undrafted rookie wide receiver Keelan Doss.

The Raiders signed Doss out of UC Davis and the Alameda native wound up being one of the team’s best players during the preseason, making his case for a spot on the 53-man roster.

Unfortunately, the Raiders wound up keeping six wide receivers not named Doss when they made their final cuts. The hope was that Doss would clear waivers and they could retain him on the practice squad, although only half of that hope came true.

Doss went unclaimed on waivers but turned down a spot on the Raiders’ practice spuad to join that of the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he felt he could better compete for a roster spot in the future.

Things change quickly in the NFL though as the Raiders shocked the league by releasing All-Pro wide receiver Antonio Brown, who was their big offseason acquisition in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Brown caused a ton of drama in his short time with the Raiders organization and asked for his release, which was granted. He has since signed a contract with the New England Patriots, which is a tough pill to swallow for Oakland.

Cutting Brown not only saved the Raiders $30 million, but it also left them with an open roster spot for a wide receiver. While it was originally reported that Doss was offered even more money by the Jaguars to remain on their practice squad, it appears that was not enough to keep him.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network is reporting that the Raiders made Doss an offer he couldn’t refuse and he will be coming home to take Brown’s spot on the 53-man roster:

Keelan Doss went from a non-guaranteed $255,000 salary to $795,000 fully guaranteed plus an active roster spot in two days, thanks to the Antonio Brown situation. A guy we thought would be a mid-round pick but went undrafted is now getting money comparable to a fourth-rounder.

Doss showed a ton of promise during the preseason and became a fan favorite for his presence on HBO’s ‘Hard Knocks,’ so this is obviously some much-needed good news for Raider Nation.

It is unlikely that he will be able to get back to Oakland in time to get suited up for Monday night’s season opener against the Denver Broncos, so he could potentially make his NFL debut in Week 2.
